The History Of Chopard

Louis-Ulysse Chopard, with the intent on producing pocket watches and chronometers of stature, founded his watch making company in 1860. Thoughout the next century Chopard continually turned out masterpiece watches. Chopard was purchased by jewelry entrepreneur Karl Scheufele in 1963. It was his vision was to unite his jewelry company with another and to continue under one brand name and to drive both areas of jewelry and watch-making into superior levels of accomplishment in design and technology.

In 1975, Scheufele built a production facility in Meyrin-Geneva, entering a new era for Chopard. Chopard unveiled the now-famed Happy Diamonds collection in 1976, and the Gstaad collection in 1980. In 1988, Chopard teamed up with the Mille Miglia as a partner and began creating the annual special-edition of Mille Miglia watch.

In the early 1990s, Karl and Karin Scheufele’s children became integral players in the family business. Caroline took over the jewelry design and Karl-Friedrich headed up the watch division. They company proved itself as a comprehensive Manufacture in 1996 with the release of a movement factory in Fleurier. The L.U.C was introduced that year and was the incentive for other interest groups to come.

The Chopard L.U.C. Sport 2000 collection was unveiled in 1999. A year later, in 2000, presented the L.U.C Quattro watch that was equipped with a new caliber with four barrels and nine days of power reserve. The L.U.C Tonneau was introduced in 2001. Chopard also became the major supporter of charitable causes and was a devoted patron of the arts at this time. In 2001, Chopard supported the Elton John AIDS Foundation, creating limited-editions of the Elton John timepieces whose sales benefited the foundation. Chopard is also intimately involved with such high-profile events as the Cannes International Film Festival.
